I’m in love… Land Rover Defender 110 Jameson’s Edition

Imagine my surprise. Today, sitting outside my office window in the arse-end of Slovakia was paradise incarnate. I honestly thought it was an early Christmas present. A black Land Rover Defender 110 expedition (with snorkel, of course), emblazoned with God’s own drink, Jameson’s Irish Malt. Just imagine – a Defender with a boot load ofContinue reading “I’m in love… Land Rover Defender 110 Jameson’s Edition”

Pension Poľská krčma,Horný Smokovec, Tatra Mountains, review

Over the weekend we stayed at my friend’s Pension (sort of like an inn) in the Tatra Mountains. It’s called, bizarrely, Poľská krčma, which means the Polish Bar. She and her partner have only had it for a few months (since December) and have done quite a bit of reconstruction on it. It’s in anContinue reading “Pension Poľská krčma,Horný Smokovec, Tatra Mountains, review”

Kestrel in tree

I really hate taking photos when the sky is like this but you have to seize the moment. This is a Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) with unusual plumage. Unless it’s something else…

New year, new wheels

It’s been a while since I last posted and a lot has happened. Thanks to the new wood stove we could stay at the house over Christmas and New Year at a livable although not comfortable temperature. New Year’s Eve was minus 15 Celsius and that was hard going. The stove now allows us toContinue reading “New year, new wheels”

New green ceramic wood stove

This week I realized an aim I’ve had for several years – to have a wood stove which cooks and heats. When we first bought the house it had one of the old, traditional brick and ceramic sit-on stoves, a giant contraption. Unfortunately, I tore it down and replaced it with a modern fireplace whichContinue reading “New green ceramic wood stove”

New Beech Marten footage – good quality!

Cousin of the Pine Marten, Beech or Stone Martens are the bane of village life out here in the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Slovakia. They plague attics and cause a lot of damage. My garden is littered with large chunks of roof insulation and their scat is everywhere. Also, they run around all nightContinue reading “New Beech Marten footage – good quality!”

Camera Shy Badger

I captured this badger (Meles meles) during a heavy storm on my Redleaf RD1000 game camera. The previous badger spent a good while licking the camera but this one first hides and then runs off when it detects it. I’ve noticed from experience that members of the Mustelidae family, for example badgers, martens and weasels,Continue reading “Camera Shy Badger”

Slovak National News (Markiza) features me :)

Tonight I was featured on the Slovak national channel Markiza’s evening news regarding the Queen’s 63rd year of reign and my writing. I was happy how my segment turned out – I’ve had some bad experiences with Slovak media due to their mistranslation of already bad British media coverage of the Nat Geo Preppers UKContinue reading “Slovak National News (Markiza) features me :)”
