This is the reality of rural living, especially in such a remote area as the Carpathian Mountains of East Slovakia. Winter is fast approaching and it’s a last minute rush to get in as much wood as possible to provide heating during the cold months. Last Winter lasted much longer than expected – until May, and it saw both my family and the other villagers running out of firewood. This year we’re expecting another long, cold and hard Winter so we’re overstocking on logs just in case.
My son Alex comes with me up into the hills to bring in another load of logs on a beautiful Autumn/Fall day. As always, we use the services of the village tractor driver. This time of year he’s extremely busy, and the valley rings out with the sound of chainsaws and circular saws from morning till evening. It’s back-breaking work but it’s an absolute necessity – and a chore I actually love doing as it brings me in such close contact with nature and our ancient past.
